I have made a post on my main blog about how we as people can initiate social reform, without waiting for someone else to come and make our reality better. I am a person of action. If I see something that I can do, I do it.
I am already into doing extensive programmes for schools, rather than whining about the state of todays schools. I am committed toward expanding this as far as my resources allow. Yet, I think there is far more that can be done.
We, the people far outnumber the authorities and decision makers. We have the freedom of immediate action, without waiting to come to an agreement or “official decision”. We can, if we choose, support the initiatives we think we can, and take them an inch ahead in our own way. Considering how many we are, even if a few of us are interested in making a positive change as and when we are able, we are likely to make a huge change and lighten the government burden.
After all, this is our country. Who can change it for the better, if not us? Stuff happening on policy levels is not half as real as the stuff happening out here, on the streets.
Let us all do our bit, when we find an opportunity.
I think you make some very important points. As a teacher of gov and civics I am constantly talking to my students about taking the power of the people to the level it should be. We have forgotten in this country the power of our numbers. The government of our state here in NY feels very threatened by these ideas. The state assembly continues to reject bills intended to activate the initiative and referendum process. The people are a threat to business as usual. We have an apathetic citizenery that is mostly been brainwashed and hoodwinded by fundamently greedy, egotistical, and incompetent people. Many of the people in our government offices and agencies should not be there!! We can make a diffference, however we need to wake up the sleeping populous!! And more importantly train our youth with the skills and knowledge that they will need to do the things you have written about.
Good to know that teachers like you understand this and are in the position to influence students into better action in the fututre.
